What's involved in getting a website?

To have a site on the internet, you first need to register a domain name (like "yourname.com"). It then needs to be hosted, which means that requests for that site are directed to dedicated computer that is always online ("servers"), which is maintained and operated by your hosting provider (like Planetmind). The files that comprise your website are put on this computer, and they are available to the world.

What is the difference between domain name registration and hosting ?

Domain name registration is the process of reserving a domain name for your use. The site is hosted when the files that comprise the site are made available on a server that respondes to requests for that domain name.

Do I own my domain name?

Domain names are "leased" on a yearly basis, but once you register a domain name, you can keep it as long as you pay the yearly registration fee.

How do I move my existing site to Planetmind?

To move your site to Planetmind, you can either move both the registration AND the hosting, or just the hosting (or, just the registration, if you'd like!). To transfer the registration, you will need the login information from your current registrar. Once you log in, you will need to remove any "transfer locks" on the domain, and also retrieve the "authorization code". Once we have this code, we can take care of the rest.
To transfer the site itself, you will need to set up an account with us, and we will give you login information so that you can transfer the site files to our server (we can also help with this). We'll also need to set up any email addresses you use @yourdomain. You will then need to log into your registrar, and change the "DNS servers" to ours: ns1.planetmind.net and ns2.planetmind.net. After a 24hr propagation period, requests for your site will be directed to our servers, and the site will be hosted at Planetmind!
